If You Have Chronic EBV, Low NK Cells, or Long COVID — You Need to Know About Beta Glucan

Written by Erin Porter

I want to start by saying I did NOT get paid for this post, nor am I an affiliate for any beta glucan company,  this is my personal experience (and what the research says) on beta glucan.

When I started researching beta glucan, I was focused on one thing: my NK cells. Natural killer cells are your immune system’s front-line fighters, the ones responsible for hunting down virally infected cells and keeping chronic infections like Epstein-Barr virus from taking over your life. Mine were low. I needed to change that.

Beta glucan turned out to be one of the most well-researched immune supplements I’ve ever come across — and I’ve done a lot of research.

What Beta Glucan Actually Is

Beta glucan (β-glucan) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the cell walls of yeast, mushrooms, oats, and certain bacteria. It’s not a stimulant in the conventional sense — it’s an immunomodulator, meaning it helps calibrate and optimize your immune response rather than simply cranking it up.

Your immune cells have specific receptors for beta glucan, particularly on macrophages and NK cells. When beta glucan binds to these receptors, it essentially activates your innate immune system, the fast-response layer that doesn’t need prior exposure to a pathogen to act.

What the Research Shows

The science behind beta glucan and NK cells is genuinely impressive.

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, supplementation with β-1,3-glucan significantly increased NK cell activity within eight weeks compared to placebo — with the benefit being even greater in participants experiencing high stress.

A separate trial using Reishi-derived beta glucan found that after 84 days of supplementation, participants showed significant enhancement in NK cells, T-lymphocytes, and CD4/CD8 ratio — along with an 83.1% increase in NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity compared to placebo. That’s not a modest effect. That’s a meaningful, measurable shift in immune capacity.

Research has also shown that longer supplementation periods — around three months — were associated with significantly improved immune function, better physical and psychological conditions, and reductions in fatigue. Which, if you’ve spent years fighting chronic viral reactivation, is not a small thing.

Why NK Cells Matter So Much in Chronic Illness

For anyone dealing with chronic EBV, long COVID, mold toxicity, or other persistent immune burdens, NK cells are the critical variable. These cells patrol your body looking for infected and aberrant cells. When NK cell numbers and activity are low — as they often are in people with chronic viral illness — viruses like EBV can reactivate repeatedly, driving fatigue, immune dysregulation, and systemic inflammation.

Supporting NK cell function isn’t about suppressing anything. It’s about restoring what should have been there all along.

The Letter That Changed Everything

After several months on NSC24 beta glucan MAX, I felt compelled to write a thank you letter to the company because something had genuinely shifted in my body and I wanted them to know.

The President of the company, Mark Campbell, wrote back with such a humble, caring letter.  That kind of response tells you something about a company. They weren’t just selling a supplement. They actually cared about the humans taking it!

I’m still taking it. I don’t plan to stop.

Advanced Micronized Beta Glucan Technology

The micronized Beta 1,3/1,6 Glucan used in NSC-MAX is extracted from the yeast cell wall and processed into an exceptionally small, non-aggregating particulate form. This structure allows for enhanced recognition and interaction with macrophages, key immune cells involved in immune surveillance and response.

Compared to larger, globular beta glucans, NSC’s micronized Beta Glucan:

  • Remains non-aggregated for improved receptor interaction

  • Allows more efficient cellular uptake

  • Supports stronger immune cell signaling

  • Helps promote immune normalization rather than overstimulation

This advanced processing is central to NSC-MAX’s biological activity and immune-support performance.

Immune Cell Normalization at the Cellular Level

Beta 1,3/1,6 Glucan has been extensively studied as a biological response modifier (BRM)—a compound known to nutritionally support immune cell signaling and activity through normalization rather than forced stimulation.

Research cited in U.S. Patent 6,476,003 demonstrates that micronized beta glucan produced significantly greater macrophage activity compared to non-treated, globular glucan forms. This activity was measured through increased nitric oxide (NO) production, a recognized biomarker associated with macrophage activation and cellular immune response.

Nitric oxide generation is widely used in research as an indicator of immune cell functional activity, reflecting the immune system’s ability to respond efficiently to environmental and biological stressors.

My advice is take your health into your own hands.  Know what labs and testing to get.  I wrote an article about this and I placed it below if you missed it.
