Does IV Therapy Work?

Written by Erin Porter

You may hear a lot about IV therapy for situations such as hangovers, but what about the role it plays when it comes to chronic illness?  Many times mold, intestinal permeability (leaky gut), endless rounds of antibiotics, a tick bite, can rock our world and our once healthy selves are now struggling to recuperate from the hit.

What Is Intravenous (IV) Infusion Therapy?

IV Infusion is a way of administering fluids and nutrients directly into a vein.  It’s often used in cases of severe hydration, for administering medications, and nutrients.  Until the last decade we rarely heard of people getting IV therapy outside of these perimeters.  Today, it’s become a fantastic way to bypass the digestive system.

Why Bypass the Digestive System?

When we swallow supplements, my naturopath physician told me we only absorb about 10% of what we are taking.  Now imagine someone with a destroyed gut (leaky gut) like I had.  How much is being absorbed then?  So now with IV’s you have powerful tools such as Amino Acids, Glutathione, ALA, Vitamin C, B Vitamins and even Silver (my doctor uses this on her Lyme and EBV patients.)  I have certainly implemented IV therapy while I was fighting Lyme and toxic mold exposure.

Although a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals is the best way to nourish your body, the condition of our GI tract and other illness may prevent perfect absorption the way God intended.  In a health crisis, using IV therapy may be a good option for recovery.

Uses of IV Therapy

  • Detoxification – IV infusion can help your body remove toxins
  • Better liver function and brain function – IV’s containing glutathione (our master antioxidant) has been known to lower the risk of dementia, liver disease, Parkinson’s disease, and is involved in tissue building and repair.
  • Anti-Aging – Some have turned to IV concoctions of B Vitamins, NAD, Biotin, and others for anti aging purposes
  • Chronic Viral infections and chronic Fatigue – can benefit from higher doses of Vitamin C
  • Remove Heavy Metals – some physicians will use chelation therapy to remove heavy metals from the body
  • Role in Mold Illness and Lyme Disease – IV Silver and other therapies are now used to treat mold sickness, viruses, and bacterial infections.
  • Meyer’s Cocktail – probably one of the more commonly known IV infusions – created by John Meyer MD at Johns Hopkins. It is a combination of IV fluids, vitamins, electrolytes, and antioxidants that may help improve a wide range of conditions.
  • IV Therapy for Cold and Flu
