What Do We Do When Our Doctors Have No Answers?

Written by Erin Porter

My past:

“Dr. I have another sinus infection”

Doctor says: “I’ll write you a script for a different antibiotic, it should clear up”

“Dr. I completed the antibiotic and my infection is back”

Doctor says: “we need to get you into surgery”

“Dr. it’s only been a month since my surgery and my sinus infection is back”

Doctor says: ” let’s try a stronger antibiotic”

“But Dr. I’ve tried this antibiotic before and it didn’t work, also since taking it I am experiencing extreme fatigue”

Doctor says: “we will try an antibiotic normally reserved for last resort scenarios”

“Dr. this antibiotic only worked while I was on it.  Now my infection is back and I think the antibiotic caused joint and muscle pain in my legs as well as nerve pain throughout parts of my body”

Doctor: “no, it’s not the antibiotic, let’s try another antibiotic, if it doesn’t work, I might have to go back in surgically and clear it out again”

AFTER 2ND SURGERY (within weeks).. “Dr. my infection is back again and now I have severe reflux and heart palpitations and my joints pain has gotten worse”

Doctor: “I’ll write you a script for Nexium.  You should see a cardiologist for the arrhythmias. As far as the sinus infection, you are still badly infected, you need another sinus surgery”.

AFTER 3rd SURGERY (within weeks).. “Dr. my infection is back”

Doctor: “Do you want to try another antibiotic? I’m also going to send you to an infectious disease Dr” (In other words – I can’t figure it out)

Two infectious disease doctors later (as well as MANY specialists for any of the “fill in the blank” illnesses I was experiencing)  I ended up seeing four or five additional Ear Nose and Throat doctors and you guessed it, there was a FOURTH sinus surgery.

Are you exhausted yet? I wrote this because this was my life for 20 plus years and after the four sinus surgeries, and HUNDREDS of courses of antibiotics later, I still had an infection and the story only got worse from there. It’s hard to blame the doctors because most only know how to culture for bacteria. I continued to culture bacteria (specifically staph and pseudomonas) but then I had a break-though.  I found a new brilliant Ear Nose and Throat Doctor who took one look at my CT scan and immediately stated that in addition to the bacterial infection, I also have a severe fungal infection made worse by years of antibiotics.  H sent the culture to a lab to verity and test came back positive.  I knew exactly where I could have breathed in toxic mold.  When I was 18 years old I started a job in Manhattan and lived in an apartment with a visible mold problem.  He explained if the fungus is not killed the bacteria will linger regardless of how many antibiotics are thrown at it.  In 1999 the Mayo Clinic released a statement sharing their new research proving 96% of all sinus infections where fungal in nature.  The antibiotics routinely given for these infections only fuel fungus and many are made out of mold which only exasperates the issue.  Another blessing was a chance meeting with someone who told me to heal my gut completely or my sinuses would never heal.  Do you remember what Hippocrates said more than 2,000 years ago?  “All disease begins in the gut”.  If this statement is true then healing the gut is the first step in overcoming any disease.  If you have been on many courses of antibiotics, eat the standard American diet, or drink alcohol, your gut microbiome may be out of balance setting the stage for disease.   I wrote a post in the past on how to heal your gut.

If you have been running from doctor to doctor trying to find answers to your illness but there doesn’t seem to be any, even the CDC (Center for Disease Control) now encourages us to “think fungus” if our illness is not responding to traditional medicine.  This makes me think of a fellow blogger friend of mine Shannon from Adios Candida.  She suffered from yeast infections almost monthly for years until she “thought fungus” and changed her diet and set out to heal her gut.   Whether your problem is chronic sinuses infections, cancer, fibromyalgia, IBS, psoriasis, Hashimoto’s, diabetes and the many many other diseases that are linked to fungus, there is hope.  Fungus can gain a foothold in virtually any tissue/organ in your body and wreak havoc.  If you are sick and haven’t found any solutions,  get excited, dig in, and learn everything you can about fungus and how to rid yourself of it.    Another great resource regarding the fungal/candida link to disease is Doug Kaufmann’s television show Know The Cause. My prayer is my blog will give you the tools you need to regain your health and get your life back.  If chronic sinus problems are your issue, here is a fantastic resource.
